One family’s journey to heal their son of autism – The Horse Boy

Some parents will travel great distances to heal their child of autism. You will see just that in the documentary The Horse Boy. As parents of an autistic son ourselves we have travelled our own distances in the alternative and energy healing worlds in attempt to give our son the very best chance at curing the underlying causes of his autism.

Jeff Korentayer, Dr. of Medical Heilkunst at Arcanum Wholistic Clinic wrote a wonderful blog post about The Horse Boy documentary and Heilkunst. You can see a short documentary trailer in that post. Jeff explains very well what life can be like for a lot of families who live with someone who has autism. He also shares that the father in this documentary is a Sulphur constitution type. That father has the courage to embark on this journey with his wife and their young son to seek healing for him. The person in our family who happens to have a Sulphur constitution is our son, and that combined with the autism makes it quite interesting. For the past 6 years our son and myself have received treatment with Heilkunst, and recently my husband began to be treated also. I have huge respect and gratitude for him deciding to embark with us on this healing journey. It will not only benefit him, but also us as parents as well as that of our son. It is not always an easy journey to be on, it is one that takes courage and for that I am so grateful to him.

The Horse Boy

Going back a few years maybe even 4-5 years ago our daughter had found The Horse Boy documentary online. That evening we sat down to watch it. I was quite interested in seeing it, since anything that has to do with energy healing, alternative therapies even shamanism I find myself naturally curious about. What surprised me the most that evening is that is our son started to pay attention to the documentary, and he decided on his own to come and watch it with us. He was glued to the documentary and what he saw. He never budged for the whole documentary. I really felt that he could relate or understand this boy. It was fascinating to watch him sit with us as he took it all in.

At these links below you can listen to a 4-part autism interview – The Horse Boy.

Our family is due to re-watch this documentary again. It’s been on my mind for a while now. I am curious to see how our son will react this time around, several years later.

A wonderful story of healing and a father and mother’s love for their autistic son.

  1. I haven’t seen the movie but I read the book a few years ago. It was being passed around at work. As you know, I work with DD adults, including some with autism. Having horses myself made the story even more interesting for me. Horses have incredible spirits, just being around them, connecting with them, can bring me a sense of peace.

I’m wondering if the movement of riding affected his energy field. Hmm…something to think about.

    • Someone mentioned that she loved the book even more than the movie. I’ll have to read it at some point also. I’m so glad that you took the time to read it. No doubt it helped you see the connection that these children have with horses and how it can impact them in such a positive way. No doubt riding the horse must have affected his energy field. Seeing our son on a horse with someone who guides/walks the horse, you see him most of the time melting into the horse. Instant relaxation for him. There’s something about this beautiful and massive animals that has such a gentle nature to them and they understand these kids. Love having you here. xo

  2. Hi Suzanne: I also loved the movie, and even more so, the book. My son is a Sulphur as well, so I can very much relate. xox

  7. Hi Suzanne!
Such an important topic to talk about and to keep out in the public. We as a society sometimes forget that some people have challenges (and triumps) that we could never imagine in our own lives. It is important to keep this awareness alive. Thank you for sharing.
