What is this little creature trying to teach us?

A few weeks ago one afternoon I was working and weeding all of our flower gardens, when all of a sudden a garter snake surprised me by moving fast in one direction and me in the other. Ewww! I don’t like seeing snakes.

Going back about 5 years ago I remember seeing a few of snakes in our yard that summer, often they’d be laying on top of the log fence as I drove by cutting the lawn. It was difficult to imagine them not being everywhere and I certainly didn’t want to walk bare feet anymore.

Last week one evening my husband was changing a few basement windows when he got a nice little surprise too. He was getting ready to spray insulation into the space surrounding the window and the concrete when out of the corner of his eye he saw something and as he turned his head in that direction, there was a snake looking out the same window as he was. It had come half way into the room from that little opening. After a heart pounding episode, he quickly thought of what to do next to get the snake to go out… luckily it did.

This evening we had someone who was coming over to do a small job for us… so my husband went to the front door when he heard him arriving. Next thing I know, I see my husband and this guy coming into the backyard and the guy is holding a long snake in his hand with our dog busy following and sniffing the snake thinking he probably had a new friend to play with. This guy was going to find a new home for the snake by putting it in our bush, far from the front entrance.

So what is it with snakes this year on our property? I keep thinking ok, it’s those log fences that my father gave us several years ago that are attracting them maybe. Where else could they be hiding? What are they here to teach me… other than that I’m terrified of them which I already know.

There are times when I feel guided to see the meaning of certain things in my life. And this is one of those times. I figured if snake appeared three times within the past few weeks surely there was a message there.

The room where the snake had made its way into is our Reiki – Meditation room. Since the windows in that room were getting replaced we thought we would also repaint and do a few other minor touch ups. I had also decided that only things I truly love were going back in that room once it was completely renovated.

When I studied Reiki with my first Reiki Master, she really connected and studied about Totem Animals and the messages the animals bring for us to learn from. These lessons I learned with her always stayed with me since then and often I have used the totem animal messages to help me understand my life better. So off I went this evening exploring what message the snake might have for me or for us as a family since we kept seeing them so often lately.

These are some of the messages I found online and in a book I had about the snake totem animal… Power – Transformation – Change – Shedding – Rebirth –  New Beginnings – Purification – Wisdom – Healing – Spirituality – Intuition – Change is around the corner – Don’t procrastinate – New ideas and opportunities in your creative life – Vision and intuition will become more accurate – Extremely sensitive to smells and fragrances – Aromatherapy may be a form of healing that is beneficial to explore – Rebirth into new powers of creativity and wisdom – Creative forces are awakening – Symbol of growth since they do outgrow their skin and must shed their old layer each year – When the garter snake appears as a totem or a messenger, it often indicates a tremendously creative time – Ideas and inspirations will flow – Expect profound change in some area of your life.

All of this makes perfect sense to me with where I’m at now in my life. I’m just beginning to explore through creativity, writing, and art. I’m finding myself extremely sensitive to scents that once upon a time I could tolerate, and now I no longer can I get headaches and feel sick. I’m using essential oils as one of  several ways of healing that I love. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’m in a period of transition, change, transformation, where I feel new beginnings arriving already. I sense myself shedding the old me as I continue to transform and become the me that feels more real, that holds way more wisdom than the old me ever has.

When the eagle flies high and you  choose to make a deeper commitment to life, the lessons and the messages come so we can learn from them. And that’s what I’m right in the middle of doing lately it would seem.

I must admit, I am grateful that snake came around to teach me all of this. Now I send it off to teach someone else. Will you welcome him at your home? 🙂

  1. That’s a powerful totem, Suzanne, but I think he needs to stay at your house : )

I was in bed already tonight, just drifting off to sleep when the sound of some woodland animal woke me up. We live in the forest and there are so many creatures but I don’t see too many snakes, not since my son left home. He was always finding and bringing home new ‘friends’.

    • Well Susan if this powerful totem is sending me the snake then I have some huge fears to get over before I feel really comfortable with him being in our space. We often hear wolves off in the distance in the middle of the night too. I’m happy that your son is done bringing you new ‘friend creatures’ home. I’m happy my son never did any of that. 🙂

  2. Thank You Mr. Snake for the valuable lesson! You can go now. 🙂
I love this story. I’ve have similar encounters with dragon flies this summer. Do you know anything about them? Your story has encouraged me to look them up. Thanks for sharing

    • Teresa, my husband also was having encounters with a dragonfly a few years back. It would even land on him, he just loved it. I love Ted Andrews books for the symbolism of animals/insects in our lives… one in particular and I believe it’s called Animal Speak has great descriptions of animals and insects and their messages. I often will just google ‘animal totem and the name of the animal or insect’ you’ll get great descriptions online also. Enjoy your dragonfly… in the meantime I will try and enjoy the snake or preferably the message it brought me. lol

  3. OMGoodness. Look at what I found. I have goosebumps.
The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world symbolizes change and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.

  4. While I would prefer to get the message without the snake, I do appreciate the power in the signs around us…animals, numbers, a message or phrase said by someone else…I love clarity and insight in any form. That is so wonderful that you have a special place in your home for Reiki and meditation. Did I ever mention I’m a Reiki Master (among other things)?

    • Michele, I love that you are also a Reiki Master. I also enjoy the many signs that are all around us, it’s so powerful when we think of it. If we pay attention the answers are there. I haven’t seen the snake today, yet… maybe I got the message and I won’t see it again… hoping.

  5. I got bit by a rattlesnake in my garage back a few months ago, and someone mentioned to me that snakes are powerful totems…so far all it’s done for me is to make me scared every time I go into the garage or hear a rustling in the garden. I used to love snakes. Not so much anymore. =[

    • I also wondered about a snake now getting into our garage. Let’s hope that you will overcome your fears. I will know how brave I will be whenever I will go out to clean my flower gardens next time. It’s a half a day job so I better get rid of a few fears before I start digging in the earth with my hands. I will end up having eyes all around my head I am sure as I get the job done. 🙂

  6. Who would have thought that such a terrifying creature (at least in my eyes!) could be so symbolic and significant in your life!

    • I’ve been walking very carefully in my yard everywhere I go, afraid of coming face to face with the snake again. lol Next is cleaning up my gardens I may need a security guard (my husband) to be there with me… or better yet maybe I’ll offer to cut the grass and give him the job of cleaning up the gardens. 🙂

  7. We get snakes a lot around our place and commonly need to call a snake catcher to remove the reptile before it ruins our party. All the best

    • Hi Victoria, I’m happy to say that snakes are not that common here. Interesting that you would have to call a snake catcher. I think I’d be moving. 🙂

  8. Hi Suzanne: Thanks for your prayers. So nice to meet you on your blog. Snake represents the archetypal energy of the south in the Andean tradition. I’ve asked snake to connect with me during this moon cycle to teach me about deep connection to the earth, grounding, shedding the past as they shed their skin.

    Many blessings,
    Janice

  9. Suzanne! Just stumbled on your blog…kinda like a snake in the brush. 😉 I love totem animals….mine is coyote. You should check out a colleague of mine – Sarah Seidelman – she wrote a fun book, What the Walrus Knows…full of info about the insight the animals in our lives can offer!
    GREAT blog. 🙂

    • Hi Erin, it’s wonderful that you have found your way to my blog. Love how you described how you got here. 🙂
Thank you for sharing about a colleague of yours and her book. I love Ted Andrews books and work for animal totems also. I’ll be sure to check out Sarah’s book. Thanks for dropping in. Loved having you here hope you’ll come back again. 🙂

  10. Today was the second day in a row that I saw a snake in the same spot, outside of my house. Interestingly enough, I have not seen a live snake in my yard since I was about 6 years old and I am now in my late 20s. Within recent weeks, I have felt so drawn to snake energy and I have been doing so much research on the ancient meaning(s) and symbolism of this powerful animal. So the fact that TWO have decided to show up in my life at this point lets me know that this is indeed my personal animal totem and that my thoughts are very powerful and magical at this moment and in this season. Thank you for confirming this!
